This 475m high military fort overlooks the city and offers a breathtaking view. It is accessible by foot, either by a path or by stairs. It takes about 45 minutes to walk up 285m of ascent.
You have three different options to go up:
– From the Archaeological Museum, at the end of Saint-Laurent Street and in front of the Chartreuse Bridge. From there, you will have a major part of trail as well as a fitness circuit along the way.
– From the Place de la Cimaise in front of the Saint-Laurent footbridge, above the Lion fountain: you will have steps at the beginning, before joining the trail.
– From the lovely “Jardin des dauphins”, you will climb almost exclusively stairs up to the top. Careful though, the garden closes at nightfall.
Note that, depending on the sanitary situation, you can also go up with the “bubbles” or “eggs”, (the local nicknames for the cable car) from the “Jardin de ville”, and even enjoy a drink or a good meal at the restaurant up there!
Finally, it is also possible to get to the bastille by car with another road on the east side of the city.
